Fitness Tip

To Exercise Or Not to Exercise
By Rebecca

Has anyone else been suffering from a cold, cough, and/or congestion? If you aren't chances are you will before very long- unfortunately. The nasty cold seems to linger on forever prohibiting you from working out to your full potential or working out at all. Is it okay to exercise with a cold? What about with the flu?

Should we power thru? I've been suffering from a cold for two weeks now and haven't felt very much like exercising, especially cardiovascularly. Most doctors will say its okay to workout with a cold but not with a flu or flu like symptoms.

Powering thru isn't always the smartest or best thing to do when it comes to your bodies overall health. If you "power" thru your body may not recover fully making you more susceptible to future illness. Any symptoms like: sniffles, sore throat, congestion can cause major discomfort but you can still workout; just make sure you are decreasing your time and intensity and listening to your body. If you have flu like symptoms you should not continue your exercise regime. Flu like symptoms include: fever, nausea, body aches, etc.

I know firsthand, as a fitness instructor, that when your body doesn't get a proper recovery after an illness -you continue getting sick! Even when you are feeling better, don't overdo your first few days back in the swing of things. Come back to the gym at 70% of what you normally would do and see how you feel the next day. You'll be back to normal capacities about two weeks later or sooner depending on how quickly you recover.  Remember as well that you hate to show up at the gym and have someone coughing, sneezing , and hacking next to you- SO DON'T BE THAT PERSON!
